When something isn’t working, our first instinct is often to try harder.
Work longer.
Add more.
Rewrite again.
Push through.
Sometimes that’s exactly what the work needs.
But not always.
Sometimes the problem isn’t a lack of effort.
It’s that you’re moving in the wrong direction.
You may need a different approach.
A different question.
A different structure.
Or simply enough distance to see what you couldn’t see while you were immersed in it.
Hard work matters.
But hard work applied in the wrong direction can simply take you farther from where you’re trying to go.
Before you push harder, stop and ask:
Is this actually the problem?
Good creative judgment isn’t just knowing how to work harder.
It’s knowing when harder isn’t what the work needs.
